Building Community Through Construction: A Conversation with Member Matthew

Bremerton is a city in motion, quite literally—between ferry rides, construction zones, and the caffeine-fueled hustle of remote workers, things are happening. One of the latest projects shaping the city’s future is Quincy Square, a revitalization effort turning Fourth Street into a music and arts hub. And who’s in the middle of it all, ensuring everything comes together as planned? Construction inspector Matthew—a man who builds the future, one inspection at a time.

We had the chance to sit down with Matthew to chat about his work, the impact of Quincy Square, and what keeps bringing him back to Bremerton. Spoiler alert: it might just be Spark Commons (and we swear we didn’t bribe him to say that).

Falling into Construction—and Loving It

For Matthew, construction was practically in his blood. "My family’s been in construction for a long time," he says. "I wasn’t really planning on getting into it, but I needed a job, and it just made sense at the time." What started as a way to pay the bills quickly turned into something he genuinely loved.

"At first, it was just about making ends meet, but then I started to really enjoy the work," he shares. "I liked seeing a project come together, knowing that I was part of building something real and lasting. There’s something satisfying about walking through a finished site and thinking, ‘Yeah, I helped make this happen.’"

Over time, Matthew realized he had a knack for problem-solving and attention to detail—both crucial in construction inspection. "You have to be able to spot things other people might miss and think a few steps ahead. I guess I’ve always been the kind of person who likes making sure things are done right." His ability to keep projects on track and up to standard made him a natural fit for the job, and he hasn’t looked back since.

From the Ground Up: Matthew’s Role in Construction

To better explain exactly what Matthew does, we asked him to explain, as neither of us had known this particular occupation existed: "I do construction inspection for several roadway projects—underground utilities, final site work, all that stuff," Matthew explains. "Basically, I make sure everything is built the way it’s supposed to be." His current focus is Quincy Square, which, when completed, will make Fourth Street the go-to spot for music, arts, and good vibes.
Though Matthew doesn’t live in Bremerton, his work here has made him an honorary local. "Once this project is done, I’ll move on to the next one, wherever that is," he shares. "But for now, I’m all about Quincy Square—and, of course, enjoying the perks of working from Spark Commons when I need a break from the construction site."

Quincy Square: More Than Just a Construction Project

For those unfamiliar with Quincy Square, this isn’t just a ‘slap on some fresh pavement and call it good’ kind of project. It’s a vision for a cultural space where music, arts, and community come together. "I know quite a bit about it," Matthew says. "This project has been in the works for a long time, and it’s exciting to see it finally coming to life. It’s going to be something special."

Matthew sees firsthand the work that goes into making this vision a reality. From coordinating teams to ensuring safety and quality, he’s at the center of the action. "It’s not just about the physical construction—it’s about setting the stage for something that will bring people together. That’s the exciting part."

The Appeal of Bremerton’s Growing Community

So, what does Matthew think of Bremerton? "I really like the area. It’s got a small-town feel, but there’s a lot going on," he notes. "You can tell people here care about making the city better."

Spark Commons: The Unexpected Perk of the Job

Matthew discovered Spark Commons while looking for a quiet place to work when he wasn’t out in the field, and it quickly became a favorite. "I was just looking for a place with Wi-Fi, honestly. But Spark Commons ended up being a lot more than that," he shares. "It’s a great space—good people, good energy. It’s nice to be around folks who are working on all kinds of different things."

As someone who moves from project to project, Matthew knows the value of having a reliable spot to work when needed. "I’ve worked in a lot of trailers and job site offices, so having a space like this is a nice change of pace. I can actually sit down, focus, and get stuff done without the sound of heavy equipment in the background. Plus, I don’t have to worry about the Wi-Fi cutting out on me."

Building Something Great Together

Matthew’s story is a great reminder that a city’s growth isn’t just about the physical structures—it’s about the people who make it happen.
